Under The Sea

Welcome to Life in the Ocean

Introduction
There are three main oceans on Earth: the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian. There are also two smaller ones: the Artic and the Antartic. All oceans flow into each other. Each ocean contains smaller areas of water called seas, bays, or gulfs which are partly enclosed by land.

Link to Prior Learning
Through Social Studies students have discussed different jobs in the community. Students will be asked to think of a name for someone who investigates the ocean. (Through discussion, students have stated summer plans for the beach, this will get them thinking.)

Unit Objective:
Students will develop an awareness of oceans through activities featuring marine life (undersea and seashore). Students will recognize and identify saltwater fish from the ocean nearest to us and locate that on a map.

Lesson Introduction:
The discussion will begin by showing the class the globe then asking, "Where are the oceans of the world? How do we know which are the oceans on the globe?" Since our school is locate a distance from the coast, I will ask if anyone has ever been to the ocean. I will display a KWL chart and ask students what they know about the ocean. I will prompt when needed by modeling ideas. The students will raise their hands with ideas to be written on the chart. Finally students will watch a video on ocean life to better familiarize them with ocean life. Click here to view our daily schedule.

Key Questions:
What is an ocean?
What do you know about the ocean?
What is the largest sea creature?
People are mammals, Can mammals live in the ocean?
What would you like to know about the ocean?

Class Activity:
The students will work in centers exploring sealife after the teacher reads Big Blue Ocean by Bill Nye.

  • Listening - Students will listen to book "I can Read About Whales and Dolphins", fill in listening questionaire, and do sealife wordfind.

  • Art - Students will create an "underwater" mural in the classroom while researching interesting facts about their favorite sea creatures.

    Songs
Students will sing songs relating to the ocean.
(Sing to the tune of "My Bonnie
    Lies over the Ocean.")

The earth is all covered with ocean.
The earth is all covered with sea.
The earth is all covered with ocean.
More water than land, don't you see?

    Chorus:
Water, water, there's water all over the world, the world.
Water, water, there's water all over the world.

So salty and cold is the ocean.
So salty and cold is the sea.
So salty and cold is the ocean.
Too cold and too salty for me.

    Repeat Chorus:

    Atlantic, Pacific, the Artic,
And then there's the Indian too.
These oceans all cover our planet.
I named them, now can you?

    TWO RAINBOW FISH
    (SUNG TO THREE BLIND MICE)

    Two rainbow fish,
    Two rainbow fish,
    See how they swim,
    See how they swim?
Their tails go left and their tails go right,
Their beautiful colors are quite a sight,
Did you ever see such a sight so bright
    As two rainbow fish?

    FIVE LITTLE SEA SHELLS

Five little sea shells lying on the shore
Swish! Went the waves, and then there were four.

Four little sea shells cozy as could be
Swish! Went the waves, and then there were three.

Three little sea shells all pearly new
Swish! Went the waves, and then there were two.

Two little sea shells sleeping in the sun
Swish! Went the waves and then there was one.

One little sea shell left all alone
Whispered, "SHHHHHHHHH" as I took it home.

    FIVE LITTLE FISHES

    Five little fishes
    Swimming in the sea
    Teasing Mr. Shark
    You can't catch me
    Along comes Mr. Shark
    As quiet as can be...
    SNAP!
    Four little fishes
    Swimming in the sea
(continue until there are no fish left
No little fishes swimming in the sea.
